Macular Degeneration Clinic

What is Macular Degeneration?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects your central vision because it damages the area of the retina in charge of the central field of vision, your macula. It is a leading cause of vision loss but does not cause total blindness. Losing your central field of vision makes it hard to read because it "blurs" your sentence centrally, makes it hard to recognize faces, makes it extremely hard to drive, and interferes with your daily activities such as grooming, cooking, and doing the things you enjoy like reading.

From a rehabilitative point, Macular Degeneration is a condition that causes impairment by limiting your vision centrally at distance and near. If after all the surgeries and injections, you still feel that your vision is not to the level that you need to function, then you have an impairment.

Here at Florida Optical Services, our personnel can assist you by providing specially designed optical aids to improve your vision with magnification.  We have over 25 years of helping individuals regain independence by using low vision aids. All low vision patients must be under care by an Ophthalmologist/Optometrist. We do require an Ophthalmology Evaluation by Robert Mandelkorn, M.D.  to determine if there are any contraindications such as blood in the macular area or scar.  Free Consultations are available with our Low Vision Dispensing Specialist.

The low vision analysis is totally independent of any medical procedure. We require the patient to be under the care of an Ophthalmologist for the low vision services. If you do not have an Eye Physician,  Robert Mandelkorn, M.D.  performs a dilated examination to verify that no contraindications prevent you from having low vision services.  Bleeding in the Macular area or inflammations change the way your eye benefit from Low Vision Devices.  These changes can happen at any time.

The analysis takes about 1-2 hours. You should do this visit at a time in which you are not tired. This is a team approach with you and the low vision specialist. The low vision service is more like a selective demonstration of the latest low vision aids based on your visual acuity and eye condition. On your first visit, you will receive a quote and a copy of what you could achieve, giving you time to think about purchasing any device. A caregiver or companion is encouraged to be with the patient during the analysis. All low vision devices require the user to hold the print closer than with regular glasses. Due to the nature of the disease, all custom-made low vision microscopes, telescopes, or prism readers are not returnable if your condition changes. Low vision devices are task-specific.  Insurances currently do not pay for low vision devices. In certain cases, such as returning to work, there might be funding, but on a limited basis by outside agencies. Low vision aids can help you overcome some of the visual limitations. Call Us.
